Dalai, Lama

The Dalai Lama of Tibet is one of the world's most loved and respected spiritual figures. In 1998, the amazing story of this "simple Buddhist monk," as he calls himself, reached a vast audience through the release of two major films, Disney's Kundun, directed by Martin Scorsese, and Seven Years in Tibet, starring Brad Pitt. With stirring text and striking color photographs, this intimate portrait shows the Dalai Lama in his many roles, from his childhood in Old Tibet to his current life on the world stage. It also tells the history of Tibet and its people and introduces the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism to readers eager to know more about this fascinating spiritual path, now flourishing worldwide. A bonus is a personal interview with the Dalai Lama in which he speaks candidly about his reaction to the recent films about his life.

Dalai, Lama

Siddhartha Gautama was born a wealthy prince. He gradually gave up worldly ways until, at age thirty-five, he attained supreme enlightenment and became the Buddha. The ancient story is beautifully retold in this unique edition, illustrated with stunning Asian-style paintings in full color, with each painting presenting a key stage in Siddhartha's life.

In a novel touch that revives an old Asian tradition, the pages read top to bottom with the book bound at the top. An author's note at the end gives background information and is followed by suggestions on how to meditate from the Dalai Lama himself.

"Whitney Stewart's new picturebook about the life of the Buddha is timely because even today the story of the Buddha has a lot to tell us. This is not because I have any personal interest in increasing the number of Buddhists in the world, but because I believe that his teaching and his own example can still contribute to global peace and individual happiness." -- Tenzin Gyatso, The 14th Dalai Lama, in his introduction

"Importantly, the presentation empowers young readers with something they, like the Buddha, might do to develop compassion for others and alleviate suffering." -- Multicultural Review

Dalai, Lama

“Impossible” was what everyone told Brandon and Cheryl Wilson when they began talking about hiking an 1100-kilometer (650-mile) ancient pilgrimage trail across Tibet. But those “impossibilities” only made them more determined. Their quest to become the first Western couple to trek this path across the earth’s most remote corner was far from your usual travel fare – some even called it sheer lunacy.

Yak Butter Blues is an edge-of-your-seat tale of survival. Alone, with only their stalwart Tibetan horse Sadhu, the Wilsons faced Tibet’s ruthless environment head-on: relentless winds, thinnest of air, blizzards and sandstorms…made even more challenging by exhaustion, hunger, illness, inflexible bureaucrats and implacable, trigger-happy Chinese soldiers.

Although the land and climate left their imprints daily, an even more lasting impression was created by Tibetan pilgrims, monks and generous villagers eager to share what little they possessed: yak butter tea, the warmth of their family’s fire, camaraderie and a steadfast trust in the Dalai Lama’s return. In short order, the couple became pilgrims themselves and invaluable witnesses to a culture pushed to the brink of extinction by occupation.

Along this simple path, the Wilsons discovered the human link connecting us all, a link that becomes clearest on a trek that removes the distractions of modern life as it unveils the truths of “deliberate travel.” In doing so, they found a sense of greater purpose, wonder, a renewed faith and ultimately what it takes to endure.

This colorful, candid, caring and classic tale leads readers along on a physical, spiritual and emotional journey across this startling land — on a thousand-kilometer odyssey once called “Impossible.”

"Wilson observes the impact of the Chinese occupation on the daily lives of Tibetans... Recommended for adventure travel and Tibetan culture collections." ~ LIBRARY JOURNAL

"An engrossing, fascinating read sure to be relished by those readers interested in adventure travel and Tibetan culture. It is also a highly spiritual story of faith which reminds us that nothing is really impossible, that obstacles are often magnified in the human mind, and that the journey is far more important than the destination itself." --Midwest Book Review

"A hair-raising yarn...a high-altitude tale of synchronicity, divine providence, begging monks, trigger-happy Chinese soldiers and dehydration." ~ PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE

"You can almost smell the dust and feel the blisters. Worth a read by any adventure or travel-trekking novel enthusiast." ~ BACKPACKING LIGHT MAGAZINE

"A true pilgrimage, one that plumbs the heart of troubled Tibet..." ~ HONOLULU ADVERTISER

"A wonderful and wild read...charged, alive, and a little threatening. Yak Butter Blues flickers insistently like a flashbulb afterimage in the mind long after the book is tucked away." ~ Richard Bangs, adventurer/cofounder Mountain Travel/Sobek

"I came under the spell of Brandon Wilson's lively and vivid prose. He is a fine writer--perceptive, funny, a great way with words--making the book a whooping good read." ~ Royal Robbins, renowned mountaineer, author, adventure kayaker

"A soaring travel diary. It places the reader in the thick of the action every bit as well as Marco Polo transported Italians to China and, as it seems to me, better than Lowell Thomas led readers in the dust of Lawrence of Arabia." ~ Joseph W. Bean, MAUI WEEKLY

"Told with humor and insight, this vivid narrative allows you to vicariously experience life at true Tibetan pace, one step at a time: so close, you can almost smell the yak butter." ~ Michael Buckley, author, TIBET: THE BRADT TRAVEL GUIDE

"Inspiring, Engaging, Compassionate! A treasure to the Tibetan people and to the rest of the world." ~ Naomi C. Rose, author, TIBETAN TALES FOR LITTLE BUDDHAS

Dalai, Lama

Samuel Evans Stokes, Jr., a son of a prominent Philadelphia family, was a 21-year-old Quaker missionary when he arrived in India in 1904 to work in a home for lepers. He soon became disillusioned with the foreign missionary community and began a new spiritual quest, adopting Indian dress, forgoing the privileges of a Westerner in colonial India, and founding a mendicant religious brotherhood. Later in life he married a Rajput Christian girl, converted to Hinduism, and adopted a new name. Stokes became a leader in Gandhi's independence movement in the 1920s, and was the only American jailed by the British for this cause. He is most often remembered in India, however, as the man who introduced American Delicious apples to the Himalayas. An American in Gandhi's India draws on oral history and interviews as well as Stokes's books, journals, and letters. Sharma's fascinating account offers a rare glimpse into a century of interaction between India and the United States.

Felt provides a nonlinear look at the engagement of the postwar avant-garde with Eastern spirituality, a context in which the German artist Joseph Beuys appears as an uneasy shaman. Centered on a highly publicized yet famously inconclusive 1982 meeting between Beuys and the Dalai Lama, arranged by the Dutch artist Louwrien Wijers, Chris Thompson explores the interconnections among Beuys, the Fluxus movement, and Eastern philosophy and spiritual practice.

Since the publication of Sorrow Mountain in 2000, I have received letters from people throughout the world who felt inspired by Ani Pachen's example. Her courage in the face of devastation, as well as the Buddhist teachings that helped her endure, brought comfort to people experiencing illness, depression, and loss. I heard from others who said they received solace from the book's essential message: the ability of an individual to face unimaginable tragedy and go on. It was a source of great satisfaction to Pachen to know that her story had touched so many, it was the culmination of her dreams. In February 2002 Ani Pachen died in her sleep. Those of us who knew and loved her are comforted that she lived to see the publication of the book. She took great pride in helping to tell the world what happened in Tibet. "After years of suffering, my prayers have been answered," she often said. "I feel blessed." -Adelaide Donnelley 2002
